Paraguay

Paraguay ; Guarani: Paraguái, officially the Republic of Paraguay, is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, which runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as Corazón de Sudamérica (Heart of South America).

The name of the country comes from the river of the same name. There is no consensus regarding the derivation or meaning of Paraguay, although many versions are similar and all of them in Paraguayan Guarani. The most widely believed is that it comes from paragua (compound of para «sea», and the suffix -gua (native to, coming from’) and y (water, river), which can mean either «water that comes from the sea» or «the water of the people from the sea».
