South Georgia

South Georgia is a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic. The mountainous and rugged landscape is mostly covered in ice, there are over 160 glacier, many of which reach the sea and eleven montains bring it to an altitude of over 2000 m, the highest elevation is Mount Pagaet with 2934 m. The island is 160 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide.

South Georgia is considered the most important breeding area of the king penguin (about 400,000). The population of the Macaroni penguin is estimated at approx. 5 million specimens. Furthermore, it is an important habitat for sea elephants and sea lions as well as one of the most important breeding site for sea birds.
