THE RAINY SEASON STARTS

The Road turns into a River!

On January 22, 2020, we came from Arizona and crossed the border at Sonoyta into Mexico. The majority of the next five months we traveled under a blue sky. The few rain showers were a welcome change and helped to lower the temperature by a few degrees – at least for a short time.

When we arrived at Charly’s in Atotonilco in April, one evening he told us about the rainy season. From a time when dark clouds are piling up in the sky. A time when lightnings flash through the black band of clouds and the thunder rumbles mightily. Well, we couldn’t really imagine that. And: There are thunderstorms in Switzerland in summer as well.

But what we have seen in the past few days has shown us that Charly has not exaggerated in any way. Thunderstorms are not just thunderstorms! If one of them happens here, it’s like someone pouring tons of water out of buckets. You can hardly see a few meters and the streets fill with ankle-deep water in no time. The Rancheros, with their typical white sombreros on their heads, rub their hands and are happy. Because without rain, neither corn nor limes and other things that people need to eat grow here …

PS. On June 22nd rain pattered so hard on the corrugated iron roof that you couldn’t understand your own word. Outside, the cars rushed past as if they were motor boats …
