Palmato Gecko
Whenever we have visitors from Switzerland, we always use this opportunity to go together on trips around Swakopmund. For example, a tour with Tommy’s Tours & Safaris. We have done it several times; but each time we are thrilled anew. This was also the case on November 7th, 2022, when we were traveling with our friends from Zurich’s «Gold Coast». (The more affluent live on this coast; the others live on the other side of the lake, on the «Shadow Coast» as the people of Zurich disdainfully call it!)
Yesterday’s tour showed us once again how much life there is in the desert. Provided you are with a guide who knows where to find the Little Five. Unlike the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), these are spiders, lizards, chameleons, geckos and snakes. Once again, we were amazed at what there is to see in the Namib Desert. At least if you know which bush to look under or where to dig in the sand – like Chantal, who showed us this Transparent Palmato Gecko. The icing of the cake was that a Namaqua Chameleon crossed our way at the end of the tour!
PS. Thommy Collard, the founder of Living Desert Tours, is right when he says: «The Namib is not about what you see. The Namib is about what you don’t see!»
