AN UNUSUAL COMMUNE

Our house-sharing community!

Co-living is a type of intentional community providing shared housing for people with shared intentions. This may simply be coming together for activities such as meals and discussion in the common living areas, yet may extend to shared workspace and collective endeavors such as living more sustainably. When you hear or read the word commune, you involuntarily think of students or trainees who can afford a larger apartment together. There they live, cook, eat and sleep together. And one tries to split up the cleaning of the apartment and the disposal of empty wine and beer bottles as fairly as possible.

Flat-, or house-sharing communities among retirees are rather rare. But they do happen. We are currently part of one and live in the house with a couple who are friends and who have recently retired. How did it come to this? We were about to return from Mexico when Ursula and Karl asked us if we would look after the house and cat during their vacation on Elba. That was a win-win situation, because we were looking for a place to stay during our stay in Switzerland. We found it in our friends’ house. And since their return from Italy the four of us live in a beautiful house on the edge of a vineyard. During the day everyone does what they want, in the evening we cook, eat and play together.

PS. We have to organize the cooking and the cleaning better – it’s never been my turn! For this I dispose of the wine and beer bottles
