If you come from Switzerland, then you know the famous destinations with the sounding names like St. Moritz, Zermatt, Mürren or Davos. If you come from Austria, then you know them as well. There they are called Kitzbühel, Schladming or Sölden.
There are also famous ski resorts in the USA. The most famous of all is Aspen. It lies in the Rocky Mountains and is well known for its dry powder snow. On our way to Aspen we passed areas that we would never have seen otherwise. And places that are as well known here as Aspen. One is Telluride; another one is Ouray. There you can not only ski but also bathe. We did that in the venerable Hotel Wiesbaden, which has its best years behind it. But the weather was cool and rainy – just right for a few hours soak in hot water.
The next day, after an overnight stay in a spruce forest at an altitude of 2,400 meters, we awoke under a blue sky. That’s what we wanted for the drive to Aspen. However, it was raining under a gray sky until we got there. So our trip to one of the most famous ski resorts in the US fell somehow into the water.
