Welcome to Namibia!
Today via Google I found out on the balcony of our bungalow that there are exactly 11,236.1 kilometers between Zurich and Windhoek, where we are now. In order to cope with it via the Trans Sahara Highway, one would have to drive 154 hours non-stop. By the Airbus A 330, which we boarded in Frankfurt on November 5, 2020, at 8:15 pm, the distance is not only a lot shorter – namely 8,130 kilometers – but also faster.
We hoped that also this time the plane would only be half full as well due to Covid-19. But we hoped in vain. The seating was tight and the plane occupied to the last place. That did not give us much pleasure, but it did it to Lufthansa, which operates this flight with Brussel Airways under the name Eurowings. (No airline can afford to fly below the prime cost in the long run!)
As promised by the flight captain, after a smooth ride of less than ten hours we landed in Windhoek in the early morning of November 6th, 2020 under a clear blue sky. A country awaited us that has grown dear to our hearts …
PS. How much the people of German Southwest (Namibia was a German colony from 1884 to 1915) loved their harsh country is made clear by this song: Anthem of German South West Africa
