The city of Mozart lies at our feet!
Above all, Salzburg is famous for its beautiful old town, through which millions of tourists flock every year. We were part of it on our first day in the city of Mozart. With thousands of visitors from all over the world, we pushed our way through the famous Getreidegasse.
Brigitta proposed that – in the absence of a game of golf – we should do something for the fitness and so we climbed the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This building, whose construction dates back to 1060, is the symbol of the city of Mozart. Its builder, resp. the one who pulled the money out of the townspeople’s sacks was an archbishop. Under other bishops who followed the first, the fort was expanded into a fortress that was never taken. Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who was later in power and had lifelong a mistress, moved out of the fortress and into a magnificent residence in the city. The fortress was from then on only used for military purposes and as a prison – significantly, Dieterich was his first inmate…
I was glad when we left this menacing fortress, from where you have a grandious view over the city. I liked the «Wilde Mann» where we savoured a Wiener Schnitzel with fries, accompanied by a large Stiegl beer, much better!
