Yodel - a slice of our homeland!
We have attended on our travels concerts in many countries around the world. In Zurich we attended many, many years ago concerts by Dire Straits, Rolling Stones and Jo Cocker. In 1996, on Easter Island, we heard local groups playing local tunes. In 2008, in Nashville, Tennessee, we listened endlessly to country music. 2011, in Darwin, Northern Australia, we heard a military band playing for ANZAC Day. In Singapore, 2012 we listened to a young Swiss pianist. 2022, at the Sphynx Farm near Omaruru, in Namibia, we were at a rock concert in the desert for three days.
And on August 25th, 2024 we visited the Yodeling day in Kandersteg. It was a special experience to hear the two mixed choirs singing in their beautiful traditional costumes. As we listened, our hearts ached a little as the singers sang the song «Dehey» (at home). Where exactly are we at home? Currently still in Kandersteg; but in just a few days we will be back home in Swakopmund. And it’s not yodeling choirs singing there, but a cappella groups with african singers.
We are looking forward to our time in southern Africa and traveling. But as always, the anticipation is mixed with the pain of leaving. We have to say goodbye to Lieseli, our cat, friends and family. And we will say goodbye again when we leave Swakopmund in spring 2025 and fly back to Switzerland. But it will be a few months until then and we are looking forward to them!
