Malachite Kingfisher - A rare Guest
There are over 450 species of birds in the wetlands of the Kavango and Zambezi regions in Namibia. A fact that makes bird lovers’ hearts beat faster. Also ours, since we are currently in this region.
The area is well developed for tourism and therefore there are also exclusive lodges that belong to the Gondwanda Collection. We are members and benefit from reduced rates for both camping and dining in these lodges. One is the Namushasha River Lodge near Kongola which is located on the Kwando River. Here we spent the days around New Year’s Eve. The food was fantastic and with the Tormentoso we got to know a previously unknown and very good wine from the Stellenbosch region.
But we didn’t come here for the good food and drink. Or let’s not just say! This lodge is also an ideal starting point for boat tours on the Kwando. We did one of these, accompanied by a guide who knows the birds that can be seen here. For example: White fronted Bee-Eater, Little Bee-Eater, Malachite Kingfisher, African Jacana, Wattled Lapwing, Cattle Eagret, African Fisheagle, Squacco Heron, Black winged Stilt, Blacksmith Lapwing, African Swamphen, African Darter, Open Billed Stork, Water Thick -Knee, Kittlitz’s Plover …
PS. However, we not only got to see colorful birds but also a large group of hippos and a large and a small, young crocodile.
