At the beginning of September, the time is approaching when the cattle are driven down from the alp back into the valley. However, when the decent from the alp takes place in Kandersteg in mid-September, we will already be back in Namibia. And instead of cows and sheep, we see giraffes and antelopes…

On Saturday, September 2, 2023, a breeding and livestock market took place on the Üschinen Alp. We saw a corresponding advertisement in the local newspaper, the Frutigländer, of the Kandertal. It was a beautiful morning and almost too warm to hike. So, we got in the car. We know the narrow road that leads to the alp from our hikes. Once again, we were glad that we didn’t have any oncoming traffic, because crossing is only possible in a few places!

When we arrived at the Restaurant Lohner, the market started shortly afterwards. We watched as the cows were expertly examined. If an agreement was reached, it was sealed with a handshake – something like that is still possible on the alp of Switzerland today!
