AT THE KARAKULIA WEAVERS

Weaver at work!

We know our way around Swakopmund quite well. Founded in 1892 by German colonists, the city with almost 45,000 inhabitants and the charm of a town from the previous century has grown dear to our hearts. (If only it weren’t for the fog that envelops Swakopmund on many mornings and only disappears around noon!)

The city is known, among other things, for the restaurants that offer excellent fish dishes. In Namibia you can hardly find fish or seafood fresher than here, in Walvis Bay or in Lüderitz. But Swakopmund is also known for the Karakulia Weavers, whose production facility we visited yesterday. Moses Helao took over the company from the previous owner in 2011 and now has fifteen experienced employees. And they weave beautiful carpets made of new wool from Swakara sheep farms in the interior of the country. The hand-woven carpets are made to customer specifications and so it is not surprising that yesterday we saw a carpet with the subject of a Jaguar E-Type.

PS. Speaking of carpets made from Swakara wool: Some carpets from this factory in Swakopmund are in the apartments of our friends in Switzerland.
