Back in the year 1906!
Brigitta’s father celebrated his 86th birthday on July 31, 2024. For this occasion, we invited him and his partner to Kandersteg for a few days. The weather was kind to us and we were able to undertake something every day.
First, we went to the Allmenalp from where you have a fantastic view of the Kandertal and Kandersteg. There were no long walks – you shouldn’t overdo it at this age. Luckily, a mountain restaurant was nearby and there we quenched our thirst with a non-alcoholic cider during many good conversations, which often began with: «Do you remember…»? We then took the cable car back down to the valley. As you could tell from the satisfied faces of our visitors, it was a successful trip!
The next day a detour to the Gasterntal. The weather was sunny again. With over sixty years of experience driving a car, Brigitta’s father was undeterred by the drive there. On a narrow, winding route we went up through narrow and unlit tunnels. After a short hike, we treated ourselves to a meringue with double cream – we definitely deserved it!
Another highlight in the evening: Brigitta had gotten tickets for a performance at the Tellenburg Frutigen open-air theater. The play «Lötschberg – a valley on the rise» was performed there, the plot of which revolves around the construction of the Lötschberg tunnel in 1906. It was an unforgettable evening and the actors were celebrated with a standing ovation at the end! (It was a dialect performance – but now we understand Bernese Oberland German almost better than Zurich German!)
