What a wonderful world!
On November 25, 2022, Brigitta rescued Piep and Matz, the two young sparrows. Since then they have become part of our family and keep us busy. Since we have to feed them every hour and a half, we know what it must be like for a mother breastfeeding her baby! But unlike a baby, the young sparrows sleep at night and don’t wake us up because they’re hungry.
In the morning, however, it starts. At 7 am, before we drink the first espresso, Brigitta feeds them both. They are getting more and more cheeky now. As soon as she opens the cage door, the two flutter onto a branch that Brigitta has attached to the cage. Then they flap their wings and open their beaks wide. Feed us, that means in the language of the sparrows. In the meantime, they not only eat from the pipette but also nibble grains. However, they still prefer the paste from the pipette – if they see it, then there will be joy!
On December 17th, 2022, three weeks after their rescue, they made the first flight – it was more like fluttering out – into the bush. They were observed not only by us, but also by a couple of adult sparrows. We were not able to find out whether her parents were among them. It seemed to us that Piep and Matz were happy when Brigitta put them back in the cage…
PS. Our kitten has now gotten used to the sparrows. She sits relaxed next to the cage while they are being fed and watches with interest. It’s only when the sparrows flutter around in the cage that the hunting instinct seems to awaken! So watch out…
