Travelling in comfort!
On October 31st, 2023 we left Great Zimbabwe and drove to Bulawayo via Masvingo. The road was in good condition and allowed a speed of 90 km/h. We appreciated that, as we had to cover a good three hundred kilometers. We reached Bulawayo with its blooming jacaranda trees in the early afternoon. First, we headed to the Cattleman Steakhouse, which is known for its good steaks. But unfortunately, it was closed due to renovation.
The Railway Museum was our next destination. Old steam locomotives from the century before last can be admired there. The special attraction, however, is Cecil Rhodes Pullman Coach, which he had built especially for himself and his companions in Chicago in 1896. The wagon is made of wood and has everything its owner’s heart could desire: a salon, a flush toilet and bathtub, a bed and an office.
There was also a cook on board who had a kitchen and a well-stocked pantry. Of course, the dishes and cutlery were made of pure silver and the glasses were made of crystal. Did Cecil drink Cheval Blanc from Bordeaux? He must have been drinking tea, because there were teacups, a sugar bowl and a milk jug on the salon table…
