What a day!
When we return from Namibia to Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland, we are always amazed by how beautiful it is here. If you turn into the Kandertal valley in Spiez, which lies on Lake Thun you find yourself in another world. Green fields with cows who have bulging udders stand on both sides of the road. Several waterfalls are also visible. And all around, snow-capped mountains rise into the blue sky – when it isn’t raining. (But without rain, the meadows wouldn’t be so beautifully green either!)
In Frutigen, the valley splits. To the right, the road leads to Adelboden. If you drive straight ahead in Frutigen and follow the valley, through which the clear Kander River rushes, you will reach Kandersteg at the end of the valley. Behind this village of 1,300 inhabitants (two of whom we are; at least for half the year!), mountains rise all around, reaching almost 4,000 meters. The road ends here. If you want to continue south, you can take the car train that runs from Kandersteg to Goppenstein and into Valais. We do this every now and then when we fancy a trip south or want to buy some excellent Swiss cheese at Walker in Valais!
