Yodelling a Swiss Tradition!
When we settled in the Bernese Oberland, we decided to take part in the lives of the residents. While we used to go to pop or classical concerts in Zurich, other events shape our lives here.
From 7th to 9th July 2023, the Oberländische Schwingfest (wrestling festival) took place in Frutigen, which is only a quarter of an hour away from Kandersteg. Part of this event, where the festival winner is chosen in wrestling, was the yodel evening, which takes place the day before. Of course, we dressed appropriately for this occasion: Brigitta put on a traditional Dirndl that she had bought a few days earlier on the flea market in Frutigen and I was wearing a peasant shirt.
Luckily, we arrived early enough, because the festival hall was filled to the last seat. At 8 pm a band played Swiss folk music a to get the visitors in the mood. For the next three hours, we heard five different yodeling clubs appearing in equally different costumes. During the presentations, the room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop! It was an unforgettable evening where feelings of home arose…
