AT MASHI CRAFT CENTER

Local Handicraft – Made by Women

Our Christmas and New Years trip came to an end after just under a month. The journey home took us on the C48 through Bwabwata-Nationalpark. Here we saw what we had not seen in the Rupara National Park in the last few days: large herds of zebras and impalas. Only elephants did not want to show, although signs along the road point out that a gray giant can cross the road at any time. And he doesn’t do that on a zebra crossing …

In Kongola we stopped at the Mashi-Craft-Market, which we had already visited on the outward journey. We were looking for a large, woven wicker basket that would serve as a laundry basket. The one in the Craft Center, however, served as a waste paper bin. And they didn’t want to sell it to us!

Brigitta selected several baskets. One was more beautiful than the other! The works of art – that’s what they can be called – are woven by women in the Caprivi region. The production takes one to two weeks. (The basket is woven alongside the normal housework or hut work – what would Africa be without its women!)

PS. Each basket is labeled so that the buyer knows by whom and in which village it was woven. This also ensures that the commission goes to the right basket weaver.
