BASKET WEAVER AT WORK

Man at Work!

I saw my first basket weaver at work on my grandparents’ farm. Back then, in the 1950s, I was a teenager – they were still called boys back then; or as grandmother used to say: Rascals!

At that time, not only Just representatives and beggars came to visit, whom my grandmother generously fed but also basket weavers looking for work. One of them was called Rado. He came from Yugoslavia and was a master of his craft. His baskets were used on the farm for decades and were of excellent quality. (No comparison to cheap China goods, which unfortunately can be found everywhere today!)

In our apartment in Swakopmund we needed baskets too. But not plastic ones – made in China! – but ones that look nice and are of good quality. A weaver who is very good at this is Manoa from the Caprivi region, who weaved several baskets for us on behalf of Brigitta. They are not only very useful but also decorate our interior.

PS. Made in Namibia: Don’t these baskets just look beautiful?
