WELL BEGUN IS HALF DONE

Lesson about Switzerland!

I remember well when in 2010 we visited David Livingstone’s grave in the village of Chitambo, Zambia. At the request of the Africa explorer, his heart was buried here. (The mortal remains of Livingstone were brought to London by an expedition and buried there in Westminster Abbey!) We then visited the nearby village school, where we were greeted by the pupils and their teachers.

Of course, they wanted to know where we came from. With the help of an illustrated book about Switzerland, we were able to show what it looks like in our home country. What «Ah» and «Oh» when the children (but also the teachers!) saw snow mountains, lakes, rivers and fat cows grazing on green pastures. A happy song was sung to us as we parted; and we returned the favor with crayons and pencils.

We had a similar experience a few days ago at Fort Namutoni. Teachers from a school class from a nearby village went on an excursion to sensitize their students to nature and its protection. What’s better than taking a trip to Etosha National Park?

PS. Once again we were happy to have a small illustrated book about Switzerland with us. The pupils and her teachers could hardly get enough of the pictures!
